NATCHITOCHES, La. – Taylor Morrison and Cassidy Barrios teamed up for 34 points for the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team, but a dreadful start by the Colonels proved to be too much to overcome as Nicholls fell, 75-58, at Northwestern State Thursday night at Prather Coliseum.
Nicholls (5-10, 2-2 SLC) found itself down 19-0 in the first quarter before Barrios sank a pair of free throws late to prevent the shutout. The Colonels climbed back to make it 32-22 at the intermission, but NSU (8-8, 2-3 SLC) started the second half like it did the first, this time using a 12-0 run to grab a 22-point lead.
But the Colonels continue to fight despite the large deficit and once again made it a 10-point game when Tykeria Williams (13 points) sank a 3-pointer with 3:37 to go to put the score at 61-51. The Lady Demons, behind a game-high 23 points from Beatrice Attura, countered with the next six points en route to the 17-point victory.
The Colonel defense once again caused problems for the opposing offense as it forced 27 turnovers, but a woeful shooting night and trouble rebounding played a huge part in the loss. Nicholls finished the game at 30 percent from the field and 8 of 30 from 3-point range, and lost the battle of the boards, 50-26.
Barrios continued to put up big numbers, scoring 18 points on 6 of 13 from the floor while adding five steals and four rebounds. Morrison netted 16 points and added four rebounds as well. Morrison and Williams both hit three triples on the night, and Williams chipped in with four steals.
All five starters for NSU scored in double figures, led by Attura and a double-double from Tia Youngblood (11 points, 11 rebounds).
Nicholls will wrap up the road trip with a Saturday (Jan. 14) matchup at conference leader Stephen F. Austin. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 3:30 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN3.
