Facing some of the best teams in the nation, St. Paul’s distinguished itself well in the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament in Florida a year ago. The Wolves are on their way to doing so again this year.

St. Paul’s (17-1-2) advanced in the opening round with a thrilling victory over Gulliver Prep of Pinecrest, FL via penalty kicks. The two sides played to a 1-1 tie before the Wolves won 3-2 in the PK phase. The Wolves’ only loss was to Northwest Rankin of Flowood, MS 2-0. St. Paul’s has tied Northshore and Vandebilt Catholic.

In the win Thursday, Justin Savoie put St. Paul’s on top with a goal in the eighth minute before Truman Gelnovatch tied it in the 24th minute for the Raiders (10-2-1).

It stayed that way through regulation and overtime, sending the match into the penalty kick phase. Kyle Schmitt produced a pair of saves in goal for the Wolves to secure the victory.

It is out of the fire and into the frying pan for St. Paul’s. The Wolves take on the best team in the nation in host Montverde Academy tonight at 7:30 p.m. Last year, Montverde beat the Wolves 5-0 in the championship game of the event and the Eagles are unbeaten (18-0-1) this season. Their only blemish was a scoreless tie with Naples, FL on Nov. 19.

Montverde has won five consecutive MAST championships and the Eagles carry a 155 match unbeaten streak into tonight’s match.

Montverde advanced with a win over Watsonville, CA.
