Six Loyola men’s tennis players garner conference honors on Thursday

(Mobile, Ala.) Six members of the Wolf Pack men’s tennis team earned conference accolades at today’s Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tennis Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.

Headlining this talented group was Ernesto de Diego who became the first Wolf Pack men’s tennis player since 2013 (Tarun Surat) to be named to the SSAC All-Conference Team.

Ernesto held down the No. 3 singles position for the Wolf Pack in 2016-17, tying for the team lead with six victories. Pairing with Steven Le (SR/Tustin, Calif.) at No. 1 doubles in 16 matches, di Diego ended the 2016-17 regular season with eight doubles wins for the Wolf Pack. With de Diego leading the charge, the Wolf Pack tied a program record with eight wins during the regular season and received the most votes ever in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll during the 2016-17 season.

Maxime Rumeau (SO/Aix en Provence, France) earned two awards at Thursday’s ceremony, grabbing a SSAC Musco Lighting Champions of Character nod along with being named to the SSAC All-Academic Team. Maxime has appeared in a team-high 16 matches and has accumulated a 6-10 record at No. 2 singles, tying de Diego for the most individual wins on the team. In doubles, Rumeau teamed with Sean Presti (SO/Lesigny, France) at No. 2 doubles for the majority of the season and ended the year with a team-high nine victories.

Joining Rumeau on the SSAC All-Academic Team were George Fourmaux (SO/Hammond, La.), Sebastian Gomez (SO/Marietta, Ga.), Steven Le and Anthony Zaleski (JR/Munster, Ind.). Majoring in accounting, Fourmaux has appeared in four matches this season where he went 4-0 at No. 5 position. Anchoring the No. 1 singles position, Business major Steven Le accumulated two singles victories at the top spot in the lineup.

The No. 5-seeded Wolf Pack is currently taking on No. 4 seed Middle Georgia in the opening round of the SSAC Tennis Championships.
