(Mount Vernon, Ga.) Coming off of an 81-69 victory at home against SUNO on Nov. 22, the Loyola Wolf Pack men’s basketball team came into Thursday night’s matchup against conference rival Brewton-Parker riding the momentum of a four-game winning streak.
Loyola battered the Barons in the second half to earn the 85-59 victory, to earn its first conference win of the season and fifth-straight overall.
Both teams got off to a blazing start in the first half of the ball game. The Barons opened their first possession with a three-pointer from the wing to put the score at 3-0. Wolf Pack guard Nick Parker responded with a three of his own to tie the game at 3-3. Parker answered with another three pointer, putting his team up 6-3 at the 17-minute mark of the first half.
Both teams battled back and forth and were knotted at 20 with 9:47 left in the first half. Loyola went on a 13-7 run to take the lead 33-27. Brewton-Parker would spark at 9-0 run of their own to crawl back on top by three (36-33) with just two minutes remaining before intermission. The home team managed to maintain the advantage for the rest of the half to take the slim 41-40 lead into the locker rooms.
Parker led all scorers with 15 points in the opening half, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Robert White and Eric Brown each had six points off the bench for Loyola. Both teams combined for 14 made threes in a high-scoring first half.
Loyola opened the second half scoring nine unanswered points to take the eight point lead at 49-41. The Wolf Pack extended the run to 27-6 to increase the lead to 20 at the 11:48 mark of the contest.
Turnovers and missed free throws took a toll on the Barons, as Loyola turned a close affair into a 85-59 rout to claim the conference victory and improve to 7-2 on the season.
Loyola shot well from the floor for the second-straight game, connecting on 33-of-63 from the field (52 percent). The Wolf Pack also shot well from distance, connecting on 55 percent of their threes (11-of-20) in the game.
Johnny Griffin Jr. led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Parker scored all 15 of his points in the first half and Brown and Pierre each added 12 points in the win.
Loyola will face the College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday, Dec. 3 with the tip-off set for 4 p.m.
