Alexandria, LA – LSUA will celebrate its tenth season of softball play starting on February 3rd with the release of the 2017 schedule on Wednesday.
The Generals will play the first three weekends at home, hosting a trio of tournaments in back-to-back-to-back weekends, starting with the Mardi Gras Tournament, then the Purple & Gold Tournament and rounded out with the LSUA Invitational.
LSUA’s first road trip of the season will also be the first conference weekend as the Generals head up to Langston for a four-game set. Then LSUA heads to Alabama for the Gulf Shores Invitational March 3-5. The road trip ends with a second conference away series at Our Lady of the Lake.
The RRAC home opener for the Generals will be March 17th when Houston-Victoria comes to Generals Field for a four-game set. LSUA heads back on the road the next weekend as they take on Huston-Tillotson in Austin. Two straight home conference series follows that as Southwest and Texas College come to Alexandria in back-to-back weekends.
LSUA plays a pair of midweek doubleheaders on April 10th and 11th, traveling to take on Grambling State before coming home to take on Southern University. The Generals return the trip to the Jaguars the next week in Baton Rouge with a doubleheader on April 18th.
Conference play ends on the road against Jarvis Christian on April 21st & 22nd before the regular season ends with a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“I like that we’re home for the first three weeks of the season,” said head coach Jerry Breaux. “We sit in a strategic warm weather place to do that, and we have a good mix of top NAIA teams along with some good Division I and II teams on the schedule as well. That should provide our club with some good early season tests. I also like the challenge of the Gulf Shores Invitational, which always draws some top teams, which should prepare us well for conference play. I think it’s a good schedule for us.”
“We have a solid nucleus of returners, including our top hitter from last season, Kim Gonzalez, and two All-Americans in Julinn Torres and Marci West. We feel we’ve added a lot to our pitching staff and think that’ll be a strength, though we continue to believe our offense will continue to be exceptional. We will have a lot of new players who will make immediate impacts, but feel we have a solid group of returners who will help lead the way and bring it together for us,” said Breaux.
The RRAC Tournament returns to Farmers Branch, Texas on May 5th to 7th. The NAIA Tournament opening round is set for May 15th to 18th at different campus sites across the country. The NAIA Softball World Series is set for May 26 in Clermont, Florida.
