NEW ORLEANS, La. – Junior right-hander Wyatt Marks became the second Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball player to be named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week this season after dominating on the mound over the weekend to help guide the Cajuns to a sweep of Arkansas State, the league office announced on Monday.
Marks joins Gunner Leger on the list of pitchers to earn the honor this season. Leger was named the SBC Pitcher of the Week on March 7 and March 14.
“I think it’s a great honor anytime the coaches from your conference recognize you for your accomplishments,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “Wyatt has really thrived in his new role this season with his move to the bullpen. He’s been able to come into games and really attack hitters, and because of that he has been very successful.”
Marks tossed five perfect innings to earn a save and a win in the series against the Red Wolves. The Lafayette, La., native came in with a narrow 3-0 lead in the series opener and retired all six batters he faced including two strikeouts to record his fourth save of the year. Marks then came back in the series finale with the game tied at 2-2 and sat down nine straight Red Wolves hitters tying a season-best with seven strikeouts to pick up the victory to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Marks is the active leader in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (3.48), strikeouts per nine innings (14.59) and WHIP (0.70). He also ranks eighth in the nation in ERA (1.09) and 40th in strikeouts (67).
The Ragin’ Cajuns open a five-game week at Tulane on Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. Louisiana will play host to Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before heading to Little Rock this weekend for a three-game series.
