HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana juniors Natalie Duran and Fleur Holtkamp both won in singles play, but it was not enough as the Lion tennis team fell to Southern, 4-2, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

Tuesday’s match was the opener of a four-match home stand for SLU (3-10). Southern (8-8) won the doubles points and clinched the match with three straight-set singles victories.

The match was also the sixth straight Southeastern has played in which it was missing multiple starters.

“Give credit to Southern,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “They have a good team and were the better team today. We continue to play with great effort, but there’s mistakes that we’re repeating that are keeping us from being as successful as we would like.”

Southern took the lead in doubles play. On court 2, Holtkamp and junior Madina Vorotnikova teamed for the first time this spring and defeated Darnesha Moore and Rufaro Chirewa, 6-4. However, the Lady Jaguars won on No. 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.

After a win at No. 6 gave SU a 2-0 advantage, Duran cut the lead in half. The junior rolled past Nicki Neal, 6-3, 6-2, on No. 5 for her fourth singles win of the spring.

Southern pulled back ahead, 3-1, after a straight-set victory on court 4. Holtkamp (6-7) kept Southeastern alive with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Stephanie Mbaya on the No. 1 court. However, the Lady Jaguars clinched the match on No. 2, as Moore defeated Lion junior Dany Raygadas, 6-4, 7-5.

The Lion tennis team will take part in Super Lion Saturday on April 1 to continue its home stand. SLU will host Incarnate Word on Saturday for a 12 p.m. Southland Conference match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
