Wolf Pack track & field wraps up day one of Louisiana Classics

(New Orleans, La.) – The last time the Loyola University track & field team were in action was March 3, when the team competed in the Tulane Invitational at Tad Gormley Stadium.

The team travelled to Lafayette, LA for a two-day meet in the Louisiana Classic on Friday.

The Wolf Pack will return to the Cajuns Track and Soccer Facility for day two on Saturday, March 18.

The team kicked off Friday’s meet with Tiera Melancon being the first member of the team to qualify for the SSAC Championships. The sophomore recorded a distance of 34.35m in the javelin throw, good enough for 11th place overall.

She was followed by teammates Shannon Hester, Anna-Kristi Hugel and Leah Banks, who recorded throws of 35.7m, 31.2m and 29.37m respectively to qualify for the SSAC Championships.

Taylor Hagins earned a spot in the conference meet with a throw of 29.33m in the women’s hammer throw. Melancon also qualified after getting a throw of 28.19m.

In the 200m dash, Meri Hebert and Leah Banks took center stage for the Wolf Pack. Hebert crossed the finish line with a time of 26.17, while Banks followed closely behind with a time of 26.50 to secure another spot in the conference championships.

On the men’s side, freshman Jarrett Richard turned in a time of 22.85 in the men’s 200m dash. Senior Earl Coats finished at 25.20.

The team will return for day two of the Louisiana Classic, with the first event set to take place at 10 a.m.
