(New Orleans, La.) Coming off of a week of spectacular performances across the board at last week’s Falcon Track Classic, the Loyola University New Orleans track & field team headed to Hattiesburg, Miss. to open up action at the Southern MIss. Invitational on Friday evening.

The two-day meet was kicked off with Tiera Melancon leading the way in the women’s hammer throw. The sophomore recorded a throw of 31.93m, good enough not only for a top-ten finish, but for a place in the Loyola record books.

Melancon was followed closely by Taylor Hagins, who managed a throw of 26.44m. Anna-Kristi Hugel and Shannon Hester recorded throws of 20.49m and 12.63m, respectively.

In the javelin throw, Melancon turned in another magnificent performance by recording a toss of 36.68m to lead the team and place second overall.

Melancon’s throw is currently the No. 1 throw in the event in the Southern States Athletic Conference this season.

Loyola will return for day two of the Southern Miss. Invitational on Saturday.
