(Westwego, La.) After playing the last seven games on the road, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team returned to Segnette Field on Friday evening to start a three-game series against Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) foe Bethel University.
The homecoming was less than enjoyable for the Wolf Pack on Friday night as the home fell in both games of the conference doubleheader – 5-1 in game one and 18-1 in the nightcap. Loyola’s 17-run loss to Bethel in game two was the worst loss for the Wolf Pack since the team was defeated by 23 runs versus LSU-Shreveport during the 2010 season.
With the losses, drops to 21-28 overall on the year and 7-13 in the SSAC heading into tomorrow’s game three matchup against the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
Game one: Bethel 5 – Loyola 1
Wolf Pack starting pitcher Joseph Kuchler (JR/Metairie, La.) came out of the gate throwing gas, striking out the first two batters he faced en route to a scoreless first half inning.
The Bethel offense caught up with Kuchler over the next few innings and the visitors put up four runs over the next six innings to take the 4-0 advantage entering the seventh.
With the Wildcats up 5-0 in the seventh, Alexander Lorenzo (SR/Miami, Fla.) led off the inning with a single to deep right-center to give the home team one man on with no outs. Ben Condara (JR/Houston, Tx.) followed with a double to left before a RBI single by Rawlings Elam (JR/Houston, Tx.) would score Lorenzo from third to give Loyola its lone run of the game. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the first game and the Wildcats grabbed the opener 5-1.
Blake Toscano (SR/Metairie, La.), Lorenzo and Elam each collected two hits in the game with Elam accounting for Loyola’s one RBI.
On the mound, Kuchler recorded his second-straight complete game (third overall) for Loyola. The sophomore got saddled with the loss in game one after allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings pitched.
Game two: Bethel 18 – Loyola 1
It was all Wildcats in game two as the visitors out-hit the Wolf Pack 24-2 for the game.
Loyola’s lone run game in the second inning thanks to a RBI by Spencer Rosenbohm (JR/Daphne, Ala.).
Bethel’s 18-run outburst is the most for the team since 2013.
Lorenzo and Charlie Seiter (SO/Mobile, Ala.) each collected one hit in the loss with Wilson Jr. accounting for the one run. Jimmy Richardson (FR/Pensacola, Fl.) reached base safely in all four plate appearances thanks to two walks and two hit by pitches.
Loyola used four pitchers in the game with starter Gary Cavallo Jr. (FR/Slidell, La.) getting the loss. The freshman surrendered six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout in 4.0 innings pitched.
