NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana sophomores Ariane Williams (women’s track) and Charlene Goreau (women’s tennis) are repeat winners of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards. The GCAC announced Tuesday the honors, which reflect competition from April 3-9.
Williams, from Gonzales, La., and a graduate of East Ascension High School, tied a XULA record with her third women’s track award of the season. At the University of Mobile Invitational Friday, Williams ran an NAIA B-qualifying time in the 400-meter dash for the second consecutive week. Her time was 57.13 seconds, and she finished third out of 17 runners.
Williams ended the meet by running the third segment of the 1,600 relay, which the Gold Nuggets won.
Goreau, from Toulouse, France, and a graduate of Raymond Naves School, had a terrific week on the road at No. 1 singles against NCAA Division I opponents. Goreau beat Southern’s Stephanie Mbaya 6-3, 6-3 Wednesday and led Kyla Kiler of 48th-ranked Tulane 6-3, 1-2 Sunday when the dual match was clinched.
Goreau has won the GCAC honor four times this season and seven times in her career — the latter figure ties her for second place at XULA with Kourtney Howell.
Next for XULA track and field will be the GCAC Championships April 22 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, XULA women’s and men’s tennis will play William Carey at 11 a.m. Thursday at XULA Tennis Center.
