Nashville – Second baseman Joey Wendle doubled, tripled and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 9-2 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes in the series opener at First Tennessee Park.
Sounds starter Sonny Gray allowed two hits and punched out seven in six innings of work. Gray, on a rehab assignment for the Oakland A’s, earned the win.
Franklin Barreto led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run. The Sounds added a second solo home run in the fifth inning off the bat of Ryan Lavarnway.
New Orleans starter Justin Nicolino allowed two runs on three hits in five innings and took the defeat.
The Sounds (7-11) erupted off the Cakes pen sending eleven hitters to the plate and scored seven runs on four hits in the sixth.
The Cakes (8-13) got on the board with three consecutive two out singles in the eighth inning. Tomas Telis with the two run hit.
GAME NOTES: The seven runs allowed by the Cakes in the seventh matched a season high. The loss snapped a string of alternating wins and losses for the last nine games.
