Warhawks slip in opener at Troy, 9-1

TROY, Ala. – The ULM baseball team finished with four total hits on Friday night as homestanding Troy compiled 15 total hits and handed the Warhawks a 9-1 loss in the teams’ Sun Belt Conference series opener.

THE BASICS

TURNING POINT
-A scoreless game through the first three and a half innings, Troy opened the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff walk that was brought home moments later with an RBI triple to open the scoring. The hosts added the second run of the frame later in the inning with a run-scoring groundout and Troy did not look back.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Troy used Trevor Davis’ triple into right-center to plate Justin Friend, who led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, before Davis scored on Mason Rogers’ RBI groundout to give the hosts the lead.
-The Trojans added three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to extend the advantage, using three separate RBI singles – from Matt Sanders, Chase Smartt and Friend – in the frame as the Warhawks needed three pitchers to get out of the inning.
-Troy added run in the bottom of sixth when Drew Frederic led off with a single and advanced around the basepaths before scoring on a two-out wild pitch later in the frame.
-The final runs of the night for Troy came in the eighth on an RBI single from Brandon Lockridge and a two-run single from Rogers to bring the game to its final score.
-The Warhawks lone run came in the top of the ninth when Turner Francis opened the inning with a double and later scored on a two-out Troy error off the bat of Tyler Cox.
-ULM finished with four hits – one each from Cade Stone, Turner Francis (double), Tyler Cox and Chad Bell (double), while also drawing three walks (by Spencer Hemphill, Anthony Herrera and Stone).
-The Warhawks left five runners stranded on the night – leaving walks by Herrera (third) and Hemphill (fourth) on base before Bell’s leadoff double in the fifth saw him erased at the plate on Herrera’s fielder’s choice ground ball. Stone’s single to start the sixth was left on the base paths as well.
-ULM starter Chase Beal was saddled with the loss after four-plus innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Tyler Schwaner, Matt Reeves and Payton Coddou combined for the final four innings out of the bullpen.
-Troy finished with 15 total hits as a team, with three-hit nights from Sanders, Rogers and Smartt. Starter Andrew Crane earned his sixth win of the season after allowing three hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings of work.

UP NEXT
-The series with Troy continues with a 3:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon before a 1:00 p.m. first pitch in Sunday’s finale. ULM then hosts the Ragin’ Cajuns in SBC play next weekend in the final regular season conference series of the season.
