Final Results: ULM T7th
Location: Laredo Country Club / Laredo, Texas
Laredo, Texas – The ULM men’s golf team was unable to get anything going on Saturday as the Warhawks posted a three-over par score on the day in route to a tie for seventh place finish at the Border Olympics.
-Due to Friday’s weather, the teams started early on Saturday to finish the opening round as two Warhawks did not finish on Friday before playing the second and final round. The tournament was condensed to two rounds because of the weather on Friday.
-Hogan Arey picked up a par on his final hole of the opening round this morning to post an even par 72. Andoni Etchenique played his final three holes of the opening round with three straight pars on the card to also post an even par 72.
-In Saturday’s final round, Arey paced the Warhawks with a two-under par score of 70 to finish in a tie for 14th in the event with fellow teammate Guillaume Fannonel. Arey got off to a good start going to two-under with birdies on holes 12 and 17 before a bogey on 18 sent him to number one at one-under par. He went back-to-back birdies before a bogey on hole number three led to a two under par score.
-Fannonel posted a 74 on Saturday to fall back to a tie for 14th after a four-under opening round on Friday. He struggled a little bit to get anything going and really hit a speed bump on the 16th hole, taking a double bogey on the card which would lead to his two-over 74. He did pick up a birdie on the 18th hole to push him back to two-over score.
-Brady Price had a steady round of 72 to lead to his best finish of the season with a tie for 23rd. After a bogey on hole number eight, he had birdies on the 9th and 13th to get to one-under, however two more bogies pushed him back to one-over par. On his 17th hole of the day, a birdie on the par four fourth hole got him back to level par, which is where he finished Saturday’s round.
-Andoni Etchenique struggled on Saturday with a three-over par score of 75. Etchenique started on the seventh hole on Saturday and had two early bogies and a birdie on his first 12 holes. He scuffuled on holes two and three with a bogey followed by a double bogey which would lead to his three-over par score on Saturday.
-Joao Girao rounded out the Warhawks with a 75 as well. Girao struggled early as he was five-over after 11 holes but was able to make a run with three birdies over four holes to get back to two-over before a bogey on number six would drop him back to plus-three.
Head Coach Tim Baldwin
Thought on the Round: We didn’t quite click. We left some shots out there and didn’t capitalize on our chances today. We had three in the top 25 but we probably needed one more player to be in that group. Overall, not exactly what we wanted but still beat several good teams and that is something positive we can take into Little Rock with such a young team. We have got to clean up our games a little bit and we have to finish better and not have as many large numbers down the stretch which hurt us. Brady’s performance this week was very impressive as he is trying to position himself in the top five of our lineup.
-Following the Border Olympics, the Warhawks now head to Little Rock for the Little Rock/First Tee Intercollegiate. That two-day event will begin on March 27.
