Warhawks drop heartbreaker in extras to Chanticleers

MONROE, La. – Visiting Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning Friday night to break a run of five scoreless innings and hand ULM a 7-5 loss in the teams’ Sun Belt Conference series opener.

THE BASICS

TURNING POINT
-Coastal opened the top of the 12th inning with a pair of walks before an RBI single from Peyton Isaacson broke the tie. The visitors then used a single from Seth Lancaster to plate the second run if the frame before ULM reliever Keegan Curtis struck out a pair of batters to end the inning and leave two runners stranded. The Warhawks went down in order in the bottom of the 12th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Coastal Carolina took the lead in the top of the second inning with an RBI double by Lancaster before ULM answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, both coming off the bat of Cade Harper when he delivered a two-run double to plate Spencer Hemphill and Chad Bell, who opened the inning with back-to-back singles to set up Harper.
-The visitors regained the lead in the bottom of the third, first using a RBI double from Wood Myers before Kieton Rivers connected on a two-run homer to push their advantage 4-2.
-The Warhawks answered in the bottom of the third inning when Cade Stone led off the frame with a walk before scoring on Turner Francis’ RBI single. Coastal Carolina extended the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out RBI single by Kevin Woodall, Jr. and the visitors held a 5-3 lead into the bottom of sixth.
-In the sixth, Bell drew a one-out walk to set up Tyler Cox for a game-tying, two-run homer over the left field wall and knot the score at 5-5.
-The game remained tied until the 12th, however both sides had chances in the seventh, as Coastal Carolina stranded a runner in the top of the inning before ULM left a pair on in the bottom of the frame. Each side went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings and Coastal was retired in order in the top of the 10th before ULM stranded a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th.
-In the top of the 11th, Coastal saw a leadoff double from Lancaster and a walk to Jordan Gore both be stranded as Anthony Herrera worked a strikeout and a pop out to get out of the threat. ULM then wasted a leadoff walk to Cox in the bottom of the 11th to set up the 12th inning, when the visitors posted two runs on two hits and a ULM error in the frame.
-Francis led ULM with three hits, while four players – Hemphill, Bell, Cox and Harper – each had one hit, as Cox and Harper added two RBI and Francis notched one of his own.
-Herrera was saddled with the loss after being charged with both runs in the top of the 12th inning, finishing with 2 2/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts. ULM starter Josh Leone did not factor in the decision after seven innings of work in which he allowed five runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
-Rivers finished with four of Coastal Carolina’s 14 hits while adding two RBI, while reliever Will Latcham earned the win after two innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts.

UP NEXT
-The series with Coastal Carolina continues with a 2:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon before Sunday’s finale is a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. ULM then travels to Troy in SBC play next weekend in the final road conference series of the season.
