MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team left four runners on base over the opening three innings on Sunday on the way to visiting Coastal Carolina handing the Warhawks a 8-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in the teams’ Sun Belt Conference series finale.

-After Coastal Carolina had just extended its lead to two runs in the top of the third inning, ULM saw Nate Reynolds leadoff the bottom of frame with a single but was picked off moments later. The Warhawks went on to tally a single and a walk in the inning, both of which were stranded to end the frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Coastal took the lead in the top of the first when Billy Cooke was hit by a pitch to open the afternoon and later scored on a two-out RBI single from Wood Myers to get the visitors on the board. Coastal added to the lead with a run in the third when Cooke opened the frame with a double and was brought home on an RBI groundout from Kevin Woodall.
-The visitors plated two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames, keyed by RBI singles in the sixth and seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
-ULM’s lone run came on Spencer Hemphill’s solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
-The Warhawks finished with eight hits in the loss, including a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon from Hemphill, who also walked in addition to his homer. Turner Francis, Cade Harper (double), Blake Buckman, Anthony Herrera and Nate Reynolds each notched a hit as well. ULM left six men on base, including four over the opening three innings and one each in the sixth and seventh frames.
-Warhawk starter Stephen Morrison was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Kyle Backofen, Tyler Schwaner, Chase Cater (two strikeouts) and Matt Reeves (two strikeouts) combined for the final 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
-Coastal Carolina tallied 10 hits as a team, including two hits each from Kieton Rivers, Josh Crump, Cooke and Myers. Starter Zack Hopeck earned the win after 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.
-ULM now prepares for a trip to Troy next weekend. The series with Troy is slated for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday night before a 3:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon. Sunday’s finale will be a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. ULM then returns home to wrap up SBC regular season play next weekend against the Ragin’ Cajuns.
