Volleyball Report: Mandeville, Fontainebleau score district wins

In the always highly competitive District 5-I, Mandeville and Fontainebleau scored victories Tuesday.

The Skippers outlasted Slidell 3-2 at Mandeville to clinch at least a share of the district championship.

KK Haley led Mandeville (24-7, 9-1) with 13 kills and 24 digs while Sam Gomez had 16 kills and two blocks. Brand Bundy added 39 assists. Emily Boylan led Slidell (26-10, 7-3) with 12 kills. It was the second win for Mandeville over Slidell this season.

The Skippers, who have won 11 of their last 12 matches and are fourth in the most recent Division I power ratings, prevailed in four sets at Slidell on Sept. 22. Mandeville returns to district play at Hammond Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with a chance to win the district title outright. The Tigers return to action today in a non-district home match against Belle Chasse at 4 p.m.

At Covington High, Fontainebleau, ranked sixth in the most recent Division I power ratings, kept its district championship hopes alive, handling the host Lions 25-22, 25-13, 25-17 for its fifth consecutive victory.

Caroline Golden led the Bulldogs (26-7, 7-3) with 15 kills and 13 digs, Bailey Scott had eight kills and Madison Artega added 27 assists. It was the second win for Fontainebleau over Covington (6-21, 2-7) this season. The Bulldogs downed the Lions in straight sets on Sept. 19 at Fontainebleau. The loss was the 12th straight for Covington.

The Bulldogs return to action Thursday at Lutcher at 6 p.m. while the Lions play at Northshore Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
