VOLLEYBALL: Lady Lions beat Lamar in Southland opener

HAMMOND, La. – Elyssa Purcell enjoyed her third triple-double of the season Thursday, helping lead Southeastern Louisiana to a five-set victory over Lamar in Southland Conference action at the University Center.

Southeastern (2-11, 1-0 Southland) claimed all the odd-numbered sets, 26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-9, on the way to snapping an 11-match skid with the win over the Cardinals (0-13, 0-1 Southland).

Purcell, a redshirt freshman, and freshman Chloee Holden, both from Alvin, Texas, led the way for the Lady Lion offense. Holden recorded a career-high 14 kills to lead all players, while Purcell posted 10 kills, handed out 23 assists and picked up 10 digs.

Rachael Bunn, a senior from San Juan Capistrano, California, posted eight kills and had a hand in five of Southeastern’s nine team blocks.

Haley Baker, a sophomore from Elkton, Maryland, shared setting duties with Purcell and dished out 18 assists.

Three other Lady Lions joined Purcell with double-digit dig totals, including Monica Ramon (23), a sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, Macey Stock (12), a sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Madi Odom (10), a senior from Kingwood, Texas.

Chelsea Grant led Lamar with 13 kills, while Amy Hollowell added 11 more for the Cardinals to go along with 10 digs for a double-double. Dannisha House contributed seven kills and had a hand in nine of Lamar’s 16 team blocks.

Haley Morton led all players with 37 assists. Carlyn Stella anchored the Cardinal defense with 19 digs.

Southeastern caps off the weekend with another Southland match, hosting Houston Baptist (9-7, 1-0 Southland) at 1 p.m. Saturday, leading up to the evening’s football home opener. The Huskies swept New Orleans in three sets Thursday in the Crescent City.

Admission, as it will be for all home volleyball matches this season, is free. Fans should enter the arena upstairs at Gate 3. Volleyball posters and magnet schedules will be available in the Fan Zone and students can earn points toward their LionUp Loyalty account by checking in on the app while in attendance.
