Sophomore went 9-1 last week to claim first weekly honor

NEW ORLEANS – After successfully navigating the University of New Orleans women’s tennis team through a five-match week, sophomore Trang Dao has been named the Southland Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week.

Dao led the Privateers with nine total victories during the week, going undefeated at the top singles flight and 4-1 on the third doubles court with sophomore Brittany Johnson.

“It speaks volumes for how far she has come,” head coach Burzis Kanga said. “She has matured into a great player. She is taking advantage of her natural talents and is playing on a whole new level. The way she has been playing lately, she should be considered one of the best tennis players in the conference.”

The Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam native took down the top players from Jackson State, Middle Tennessee, the University of Connecticut, UIW and the 2016 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Hortense Boscher. In doubles play, Dao’s lone setback came in a 7-6 outing against a red-hot Middle Tennessee duo that has won six-straight matches.

The conference accolade is the first weekly honor for Dao, and the first nod for the women’s tennis team this season.

The Privateers are back in action on Saturday, Apr. 8 when they take on Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas at 9 a.m. UNO returns to the University Tennis Center on Friday, Apr. 14, when they host Sam Houston State.
