Junior guard grabs honor for the third time this season

New Orleans – After averaging 39 points in two games this week, Randi Brown of the University of New Orleans has been voted Southland Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Brown, the conference’s leading scorer at 22.8 points a game, scored 41 points against Southeastern Louisiana in a 102-87 win on Mar.2, and followed that with a 38-point afternoon in a loss to Nicholls, 79-69 on Mar. 4.

The Houma, Louisiana product previously won player of the week honors for her performances during the weeks of Nov. 28 and Jan. 2, when she set a school-record with 45 points versus Texas A and M-Corpus Christi on New Year’s Eve.

For the week of Mar. 5, Brown scored 79 points hitting 25-of-44 (56.8) shots from the field including 9-of-21(42.8) from behind the 3-point arc. She was 20-of-22 from the free throw line for a 90.9 percentage. In the win over Southeastern Louisiana Brown also had 8 assists and 4 steals.

Brown also climbed up the UNO scoring ladder last week with her performances. She now has 1,449 career points, good enough for third all-time at the University of New Orleans, trailing Carvie Upshaw ((1985-89) with 1,759 and UNO’s all-time leading scorer Sandra Hodge (1980-84) who has 2,824.

This week Brown ranks ninth in the nation among Div. I scorers.

New Orleans finished 14-14 overall and 9-9 in Southland Conference competition. As the fourth-seed, they earned a first round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament and will face the winner of the Texas A & M-Corpus Christi-Northwestern State contest on Friday, Mar. 10, in Katy, Texas.

The Southland Conference Player of the Week is selected by a vote of sports information directors from member schools.
