Privateers sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 5-0 before falling to ULM Warhawks by an identical score

HOUSTON – On the surface it, the University of New Orleans beach volleyball team posted a sweep and got swept in day two of the Third Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Third Coast Beach Volleyball Club. A look inside the numbers, however, show a much different and more positive picture of how far the Privateers have come so far in the early portion of the 2017 season.

After posting a 5-0 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-3) in a morning matchup, UNO (5-7) did in fact fall to ULM (8-5) by an identical score. It was the second loss to the Warhawks this season, but after dropping three straight-set contests and getting no closer than three in either of the two three-set losses back on March 16 in Monroe, La., the Privateers had three pairs contests extend to three stanzas and six of the 13 sets on Saturday were decided by just two points.

The Privateers got off to in the final day of the Third Coast Classic as sophomore Madison Miller and freshman Brianna Vega cruised past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kelsee Felux and Claire Karsten (21-18, 21-3) in No. 4 action and the tandem of senior Lauren Levy and freshman Rhyan Rand bounced back from a 21-17 opening-set loss to Mackenzie Coates and Kristyn Nicholson on Court 5 to tally wins of 21-15 and 15-6 to stake UNO to a 2-0 advantage.

The freshman tandem of Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn clinched the win with a 21-16, 23-21 victory over the Islanders’ No. 2 team of Madison Fitzsimmons and Madison Woods. While the team decision had already been decided, senior Brook Frank and sophomore Samantha Uline kept a good thing going with a 21-14, 21-15 decision against Morgan Carlson and Mallory Moran in No 3 play while freshman Veronica Corcoran and senior Cara Sander completed the sweep with a 21-18, 24-22 outcome at the top of the lineup over Brittany Gilpin and Madison Green.

The rematch against ULM had a very different outcome, but the only lopsided loss came on Court 4 where Rebecca Brown and Catherine Griffith rolled past Miller and Vega 21-14, 21-15. Levy and Rand opened their No. 5 contest against Holland Ponthieux and Ana Ribeiro with a 21-19 loss but bounced back in set two to take a 21-17 victory. In the third-and-final frame, the ULM tandem edged the Privateer pair 15-13 to stake the Warhawks to a 2-0 advantage.

The next pair to finish came on Court 1 where Sander and Victoria Corcoran dropped a pair of 22-20 contests to Kori Simpson and Hadley Swartz while Frank and Uline bounced back from an opening set 21-19 loss to Claire Crossfield and Tara Jenkins with a 21-19 win of their own before dropping a 15-9 contest in set three. It was a similar story in No. 2 play as Kuhn and Veronica Corcoran squeezed a 21-15 set-two win between losses of 21-16 and 15-11 to Delaney Drive and Gabby Love to account for the final score.

New Orleans returns to action on Friday, March 31 when it heads to Miami, Fla., to take part in the Fifth Annual Surf & Turf Invitational. In the prestigious event, the Privateers will face Florida International, Florida Atlantic and UCLA in day one before squaring off against Arizona State, Tulane and Florida State on April 1.
