ULM falls in series finale to Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The ULM baseball team stranded 10 baserunners on Sunday afternoon as Georgia State handed the Warhawks a 6-1 defeat in the teams’ Sun Belt Conference series finale in Atlanta.

THE BASICS

TURNING POINT
-The Warhawks stranded 10 runners in the game on Sunday, including five runners in the first three innings combined. ULM loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first before a strikeout and popup ended the threat, and then stranded two runners in the top of the third frame. Overall, ULM left at least one runner on in six different innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Georgia State took the lead in the bottom of the second inning via a one-out triple from Luke Leonard, who scored moments later on an RBI single by Payton Mann. Mann was involved in the hosts’ three-run fourth frame, collecting another RBI single to plate the first run of the inning before an RBI single by Brandon Gonzalez brought in a run and a ULM throwing error on the play plated a second run, and third of the inning.
-The Warhawks’ lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Cade Stone led off the frame with a single and later scored on Spencer Hemphill’s two-out double down the left field line.
-Georgia State answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Jones led off with a single before scoring on Jarrett Hood’s sacrifice fly, and the pair produced the final run of the afternoon in the seventh via Jones single and a RBI base hit from Hood.
-ULM finished with seven hits in the loss, led by two-hit afternoons from Stone and Turner Francis, while Hemphill (RBI), Cade Harper and Brian Barefoot had one hit each as the Warhawks struck out 12 times as a team.
-Warhawk starter Trey Auger was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout over three innings of work. Four ULM relievers combined for the final five innings and allowed three total runs on five hits with five strikeouts as a group.
-Georgia State saw Jones, Hood and Mann each finish with two hits as the hosts finished with nine total hits. Starter Bryan White earned his first win of the season after allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts over five innings of work.

UP NEXT
-ULM now readies for a midweek series at Ole Miss beginning on Tuesday night with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch before a 4:00 p.m. start on Wednesday afternoon. The Warhawks then return home this upcoming weekend when Coastal Carolina comes to Monroe for a three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend series.
