NATCHITOCHES – After impressive outdoor debuts last Saturday, Northwestern State competitors Micah Larkins and Kelsey Frank swept Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors Wednesday.
Larkins, who earned All-America honors last spring as part of the Demons’ 15th-place 4×100 meter relay team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, won the men’s award. Frank took the women’s honor in voting by sports information contacts for the sport around the conference.
Larkins, a sophomore from Haughton, claimed two wins at the Cowboy Relays hosted by McNeese. His 10.45 100 meter time ranks him second nationally one week into the outdoor campaign. He was part of a 4×100 relay effort that clocked 40.11, also the second-best time in the country.
Frank, a junior from Kinder, uncorked a winning javelin throw at McNeese, a 155-1 ¼ mark that is fourth nationally.
Their performances helped NSU capture the Bob Hayes Cup awarded to the school at the Cowboy Relays with the best combined men’s and women’s point total (252). The Demons won the men’s division with 119 points and the Lady Demons were women’s champs with 133 points.
The NSU track teams will compete Wednesday afternoon at Louisiana Tech in a twilight meet, the Jim Mize Invitational. Saturday, NSU takes part in a competition at TCU.
