FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana track and field head coach Sean Brady was expecting a big day from his throws group at the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.

The group met those expectations as senior Alex Young and freshman Ashley Davis had a pair of record-breaking performances that earned them Southland Conference Athlete of the Week honors on Monday.

Young threw 234 feet, 9.5 inches to break the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex hammer throw record by 4.5 feet. It was also the second-longest throw in Southeastern history, eclipsed only by Young’s throw of 235-5 at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays earlier this season. He also threw 234-7 on his first attempt of the day. Both throws would rank second in the Southland Conference in 2017.

Davis threw 53-7 in taking third in the shot put, breaking the school record of 51-7.75 she set at the Texas Relays. She also increased her lead in the conference by more than six feet and moved into 17th place in the East region and 32nd nationally. She finished behind just Jeneva Stevens of the New York Athletic Club and Ole Miss’ Janeah Stewart, the fifth-ranked shot-putter in the country.

“It was a great week for the throws group,” Brady said. “It was a huge PR for Ashley and a facility record for Alex. They continue to improve and are beginning to peak at the right time. I’m confident they will be able to carry this into the Southland Championships and to regionals. Alex has been in this position before and we expect big performances (from him), but for a freshman (Davis) to continue to improve nearly 10 feet over her high school personal record is truly special. (Assistant) coach (Amin) Nikfar has done an incredible job with her this season.”

Monday’s honor was Young’s third of the 2017 outdoor season and the fifth of his career. The Nashville, Tennessee native was also recognized for the weeks of March 29 and April 5. Davis, a native of Watson, Louisiana, was honored for the second time in her career, having also been selected the Female Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 20 during the indoor season. She has twice been selected honorable mention athlete of the week this outdoor campaign.

Southeastern student-athletes have now been named conference athletes of the week five times this outdoor season with junior pole vaulter Devin King having been selected for the week of April 19. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by
