There is one thing we know for sure on draft night. The Hornets will not be taking a European. The Hornets have worked out over 20 players and ZERO have been Euros.
Every February recruiting analysts rank college football signing classes. Fans get excited over where the class is ranked and who signs a letter of intent. There is a huge problem with the expectations and rankings. Many of these kids are not academically qualified the first Tuesday in February.
At LSU, all but 2 have qaulified and will be on campus for the start of pracitce. WR Deangelo Benton of Hargrave Military Academy and Bastop High School has work to do this summer as does WR Tim Molton of Destrehan. Belle Chasse defensive back Rocky Duplessis will be a grayshirt and will count against the 2009 signing class.
A rule change that has slipped under the radar among college basketball fans is the decision of the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Committee to move the 3 point line back a full foot to 20 feet, 9 inches. The committee approved pushing back the line last May but it doesn’t take place until this upcoming 2008-09 season. It will be interesting to how the extra foot affects the 3 point percentage and will it take away some of the upsets we see in March from teams that live/die by the 3 ball.
The New Orleans Saints have been extremely proactive in the negotiations for a new contract with star WR Marques Colston. Can you blame them? The Saints receiving corps may be the weakest spot on the team. After Colston, what do you have? An unreliable Devery Henderson, an average Terrance Cooper, an aging David Patten, and an unproven Robert Meacheam. Maybe Lance Moore or Skyler Green will be a guy who can step up but I wouldn’t bet on it. Drew Brees is good but he isn’t a miracle worker.
Fresno State and Georgia are the 2 teams that sit in the drivers seat at the College World Series. The story of Fresno State is one that you will eventually see on the big screen if they are to win it all. An unreal stat for the Bulldogs is that every player on their roster is from the state of California. You will look long and hard to find a college baseball team that has a roster filled with only home state kids.
CBS Sportsline is having a most fierce NFL mascot competition. Gumbo the Dog represented the New Orleans Saints and was elminated in the first round by Viktor the Viking. The tournament has reached the semifinals. It is a big disappointment that Gumbo was knocked out in the first round. If only the man who calls himself Moses could have been the Saints representative. There is no way Moses could lose! You can check out the results here.
