Mobile, AL – No. 9 LSUA rallied in singles action to stun No. 8 Northwestern Ohio, defeating the Racers 5-3 Wednesday afternoon to clinch a spot in the NAIA National Championship Tournament quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s three-year history.
The Generals started slow, allowing the Racers to jump out to a 2-1 lead with LSUA’s lone win in doubles coming in the No. 3 match-up as Maria Emilia Montenegro and Betsabet Vasquez Hidalgo won 8-3.
But LSUA quickly made up the deficit in singles play as Paula Gordillo tied the team score at 2-2 by shutting out her opponent in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-0. Maria Emilia Montenegro gave LSUA the lead by dominating the No. 5 match, 6-0, 6-1.
The final two points to clinch the match would not come easy, but Sara Andrade put the Generals on the verge of victory with a 7-5, 7-6 win in the battle of each team’s top player. Betsabet Vasquez Hidalgo got the historic point for LSUA as she came back from a game down to win the No. 4 match 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 and clinch the match for the Generals.
The Generals (19-3) now move on to the quarterfinals for the first time, where LSUA will meet up with the No. 1 seed and undefeated defending national champion Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies (23-0). Opening serve for the quarterfinal match is set for 1:00 P.M. at the Mobile Tennis Center.
