THIBODAUX, La. – Southeastern Louisiana juniors Dalina Dahlmans and Fleur Holtkamp were both victorious in singles and doubles play, but the Lions fell just short in a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of Nicholls in Southland Conference women’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

Southeastern fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in Southland Conference play with Wednesday’s loss. Nicholls improved to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in league action by taking the doubles point and splitting the six singles matches.

“Our attitude and effort are always there and for that I’m proud of our team,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “But today Nicholls was the better team and won the big points.”

In doubles play, Holtkamp and Dahlmans improved to 5-3 this spring with a 6-4 win over the Nicholls duo of Ling Gu and Clem Krug on the No. 1 court. However, the Colonels won on the other two courts to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Southeastern earned its three points with a trio of straight-set singles victories. On No. 2, Holtkamp (4-4) was too much for Krug in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Lions’ other two singles victories came on the bottom two courts.

On No. 5, Dahlmans (4-4) rolled past Changwei Wei, 6-4, 6-1. SLU junior Natalie Duran ran her spring singles mark to 3-5 with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Nicholls’ Andrea Mastrippolito on the No. 6 court.

Nicholls countered to even the match with straight-set victories on the No. 3 and 4 courts. The match was decided on the No. 1 court. Southeastern junior Dany Raygadas pushed Gu to three sets, before ultimately landing on the wrong end of a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision that gave the Colonels the league victory.

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to New Orleans for a 2 p.m. Southland match at UNO.
