JONESBORO, Arkansas – The Louisiana Tech women’s tennis team took advantage of defaults in singles and doubles by Arkansas State to pick up a 6-1 road win over the Red Wolves on Saturday afternoon at the A-State Tennis Complex.
With one default in doubles by the home team, LA Tech (9-7) needed just one victory from a tandem and got it. The Lady Techsters then went up 2-0 on a default at No. 6 singles by A-State (1-12), followed by singles wins on four of the five remaining courts.
“We talked in the beginning of this week about refocusing and gaining some momentum here in the next few matches and today was a great start,” head coach Amanda Stone said. “We took care of business in doubles. We were confident and implemented what we have been working on. We carried that confidence into singles and looked sharp on all the lines. It was a great team effort.”
Sealing the doubles point was the duo of senior Marta Sramkova and freshman Nadja Manjon who defeated Julie Gauguery and Allison Quammen by a final score of 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
With the Lady Techsters up 2-0 after the default, sophomore Sonia Chen quickly made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Victoria Pisani on court three. The Taichung, Taiwan native improved to 3-0 herself from that singles position.
The clincher then came from junior Alba Escalona Perny who cruised by Tori Roberts 6-3, 6-2 on court four. It was her ninth singles win of the year, tying for the most on the team. It was also her first match this season from the No. 4 spot.
Also picking up singles wins were Sramkova who was a 6-3, 6-3 winner on court five and Manjon who battled back from dropping the first set in a tiebreaker to winning in a third-set super breaker 6-7, 6-0, 1-0 (4) on court two.
Just like Perny, Manjon also picked up singles victory No. 9 on the spring dual season.
It was the program’s first win over Arkansas State since 1989.
LA Tech will go for win No. 10 on the season on Tuesday when they face Alcorn State in a neutral site match in Vicksburg, Mississippi. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
