JONESBORO, Ark. – The ULM baseball team jumped out to an early three run lead on Sunday afternoon, only to see Arkansas State score the game’s final eight runs, as the hosts handed the Warhawks an 8-3 loss to close out the opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference play.

-With ULM leading 3-0 after three innings, Arkansas State cut into the deficit with two runs in the fourth before taking the lead for good as part of a three-run seventh inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Warhawks posted a pair of runs in the second inning to start the scoring, first with an RBI double from Cade Stone before Nate Reynolds brought home the next run via a sacrifice fly. ULM pushed the lead to three runs on Cade Harper’s RBI single in the third inning.
-Arkansas State cut into the ULM lead with two runs in the fourth with back-to-back hits, first with an RBI triple before an RBI single moments later. The hosts tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice ground ball before a two-run single later in the inning gave Arkansas State the lead for good. Arkansas State added three final runs in the eighth on an RBI single, a balk and a ULM throwing error.
-ULM was led by Chad Bell, Spencer Hemphill and Stone, who each had two hits in the loss, as Stone notched a pair of doubles and Bell added a double of his own. Harper (1-for-4), Stone and Nate Reynolds (0-for-2, walk) drove in the Warhawk runs.
-Warhawk starter Chase Beal was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work while striking out seven batters.
-The Warhawks return home to host regional foe Grambling on Tuesday night at home in the first of four straight games at home. ULM will step back into Sun Belt Conference play when Little Rock comes to town for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night (6:00 p.m. start) before afternoon games on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) afternoons.
