NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball program is represented by four student-athletes who are playing in a pair of summer leagues.
Outfielder Dan Perkins joined the Woodlands Strykers of the Texas Collegiate League last week. A junior transfer from Cleveland State, Perkins played in 41 games and ranked second on the UNO roster in both runs (27) and stolen bases (13).
This past Saturday, the Privateer scored the go-ahead run in the ninth as the Strykers claimed their inaugural win 6-5 over the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Jonathan Coco, Seth Laigast and Nathan Rome are competing with the New Orleans Spice, a program that won back-to-back Dizzy Dean national championships in 2006 and 2007.
All three UNO representatives just completed their freshman campaign for head coach Bruce Peddie. The surroundings will be familiar for the trio, as the New Orleans Spice plays the majority of their contests at Maestri Field.
Rome made three appearances out of the Privateer bullpen while Coco and Laigast appeared in 38 and 17 games, respectively. Coco was primarily used at first base while Laigast handled shortstop duties.
The Spice opened their campaign with an 11-3 win last Tuesday and will make their next appearance at Maestri Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
