Los Angeles prep quarterback Reginald Bell (Dorsey HS)
Worth noting: Tulane's positional objectives relative to the recruiting Class of 2013 are as clear as their new geographic emphasis.
Of the Green Wave's 17 early decision-makers, four are offensive linemen and five are defensive linemen, either ends or tackles.
"And our biggest need is still more defensive lineman," said recruiting coordinator Doug Lichtenberger.
Aside from the wealth of linemen, Tulane has secured two quarterbacks, three linebackers and three defensive backs. The Wave would also prefer to add at least one running back.
The offensive linemen include versatile Brandon Godfrey (6-foot-4, 270 pounds), one of two commits from state champion John Curtis. Godfrey, whose brother Jerry played at Tulane, could play center, guard or tackle. Very tough and athletic, his coaches say. Tulane ventured to Phoenix, Ariz., to snare Mike Lizanich, a specialist who will handle the deep snaps.
Warren Easton's Jason Stewart is Tulane's largest player at 6-foot-5, 335 pounds. Yet the massive Stewart possesses the footspeed to try out as a pulling guard. Chris Taylor, a guard out of Zachary, is characterized as being extremely physical and a highly-touted recruit. .
Like LSU, Tulane has landed a quarterback from Los Angeles and, like LSU, Tulane has two QBs who bring different styles to the squad. Reginald Bell of Dorsey High, who has family ties to Tulane, possesses exceptional all-around athletic ability as a runner and passer. He is also a champion high hurdler. Jesuit's Tanner Lee possesses a good, accurate arm and is more of a pocket passer.
Tulane had added four locals who project at defensive end, including Eric Bell (6-3, 245) of West St. John, an impressive-looking prospect with a large frame. O.P. Walker's Corey Smith may soon stand 6-foot-7, a physical specimen who excels against the run. Teammate Lyn Clark really improved his skills in the off-season and has a great frame. Eldrick Washington of Helen Cox is physical at the point of attack and should get much bigger.
The Green Wave feels it landed a real plum in tackle Antonio McGhee (6-0, 270) from Parkway High in Bossier City. A former Louisiana Tech commit, McGhee had interest from SMU, Oregon State, Memphis, Ole Miss and South Carolina. The Wave feels he is an elite recruit.
Belle Chasse's Quinlan Carroll, who stands out as a pass rusher, could also play end. Luke Jackson of state champion of St. Charles, an inside linebacker, has recently added 10 pounds and should get much bigger.
When you see that Tulane lists diminutive 5-foot-7, 180-pound Nico Marley at linebacker, you might think that Coach Curtis Johnson has misplaced some of his gray matter. But Marley is described as fearless and dynamic, someone who makes plays all over the field. As for size, Nico's father Rohan Marley, a smallish 5-foot-8 and 200 pounder, played linebacker at the University of Miami. Tulane felt that Nico's size enabled the Greenies to slip in and nab him. Johnson also knew of the Marley family from his days at Miami.
Curtis' Richard Allen blends speed and cover skills at cornerback. Parry Nickerson of West Jefferson also has speed and lockdown abilities. He could project at safety or corner. Leonard Davis of East St. John can also cover and is physical in run support.
Godfrey, McGhee, Smith and Taylor have three-star ratings according to Rivals.com.
Deep snapper Billy Johnson, a transfer from the University of Georgia, will be eligible to compete this fall.
