The Southern Jaguars are once again playing some great baseball.

Head coach Roger Cador is in his 28th year as head coach of the Jaguars.  He has led his teams to 14 SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) titles and 10 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.  He has produced many professional players and several major leaguers.  It should be no surprise that this year’s team is another very good club who has a great chance to win the SWAC and make another NCAA appearance.

The Jaguars are currently on an 11-game winning streak and have an overall record of 25-14 and are 14-7 in SWAC play.  They are fresh off of a sweep of Prairie View on the road this past weekend.

"They are very focused and doing the little things, such as, hitting with two strikes, playing good solid defense and the pitching staff has been very good," said Cador, a great teacher of baseball both individually and collectively.

Baseball yields many “teaching moments” and Coach Cador is always on top of that.  That is a key reason for 28 years of success for Jaguar baseball.

There are three key regulars who are excelling at the plate this seaosn for the Jaguars.  Stephen Wallace is hitting .343, 4 HR’s and 26 RBI’s, Derrick Hopkins is close behind at .340 iwht 4 HR’s and 25 RBI’s and Tiger McGriff is hitting .317 plus team-leading totals with 5 HR’s along with 35 RBI’s.

On the mound, Southern has enjoyed some consistent work from Jose De Leon and Doc Holliday, two weekend starters who throw strikes and do not walk batters.  Josh Powell has been very good out of the bullpen.  This team is playing well on defense as well.

The Jaguars will host the SWAC Tournament at Lee-Hines Field May 16-20.  The winning team will earn an NCAA bid to a regional tournament.  Do not be surprised to see the Jaguars win on their home turf and make the Field of 64 bracket again.
