Thought that I would begin by testing your memory. Everyone remembers Cincinnati Bengals former running back Ickey Woods. What was his real first name? Archie Manning arrived as the #1 draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 1971. Who were his RB's and receivers that first season?

Which former New Orleans Saint scored the very first touchdown in an exhibition game during the 1967 preseason for the Saints expansion team?

In recruiting news...

The nation's top prospect, OT Seantrel Henderson (6'7-295) from St. Paul, Minnesota, has trimmed his list to Minnesota, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Out of that list, the 4 schools that are assured of visits by Henderson are Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida. Florida State could be the 5th visit, and Minnesota, his home state school, will get consideration. There appears to be no timetable nor hurry for a final decision.

West Monroe defensive end Jordan Allen (6'6-245) had 70 tackles in 2008, 9 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 7 fumble recoveries. LSU is thought to be the team to beat, but Nebraska, Alabama and Tennessee have all nuzzled up to the Tigers in the competition. Colorado could be the 5th team at the top.

Torren Jones is a 6-7, 200 pound power forward who just completed 8th grade. That's right - he is set to enter his freshman year at Basha high school in Chandler, Arizona and has already been offered a scholarship by the Arizona Wildcats for the 2013 class. Although offers cannot be made official for his class as of yet, the 'Cats would gladly take a future commitment for the rising star.

Soma Vainku is a 6'0-257 FB / MLB out of Eureka, California , who is beginning to draw a lot of attention from schools from around the country. He runs a 4.62 forty and has been offered some schools as a LB , others as a RB. He rushed for 1,500 yards and 27 touchdowns as a Jr. in 2008. His father was a Rugby star in his native, Tonga.Oregon State, Washington, San Diego State, Hawaii and Arizona State have all offered. USC is on the fringe , but likes him as a RB.

In the pros...

--Pacman Jones now wants to be called Adam or even "Mr. Jones." Good luck with that.

--If you think that the 1968 Cincinnati Bengals, an AFL expansion team, was the only crack at professional football that the city has ever had, are you wrong. The Cincinnati Celts were a member of pro football known as the American Professional Football Association in 1921. It lasted only one season.

In 1933, Cincinnati had another entry into pro football called the Cincinnati Reds, lasting until 1935 before closing their doors. The following year, they continued, not in the American Football League, but as an independent, playing 3 games. In 1939, the first rendition of the Bengals joined a new AFL, but the league soon folded. In 1940, another new AFL sprouted and welcomed the team called the Cincinnati Bengals to be a new member. That league played 1940 and '41 but folded again as the United States prepared to enter World War II.

--Answers to questions at the beginning of this article.
What was Ickey Woods real first name? Elbert "Ickey" Woods, all-the-buzz in the NFL in 1988 after rushing for 1,055 yards and 15 touchdowns, helped lead the Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl XXIII played in Joe Robbie Stadium on January 22, 1989. Former Tulane star tight end Rodney Holman was on that team along with lefty quarterback Boomer Esiason. The San Francisco 49ers prevailed 20-16 when Joe Montana connected with John Taylor for the winning score in the final minute of the game.

Who were the runners and receivers on Archie Manning's first season with the Saints? The running backs were Jim Strong, Bob Gresham, Jamie Ford and Tony Baker. Saints Hall of famer Danny Abramowicz was joined by Dave Parks , Bob Newland and Al Dodd as Archie's first targets in the passing game.

Which Saints player scored the very first touchdown in an exhibition game in the franchise's history? Les Kelley (Saints 1st pick in ' 67) took a swing pass from Gary Cuozzo for a 19 yard touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams August 2, 1967 in Anaheim. The Rams won 16-7.

In those days, teams played 6 exhibition games, and the expansion Saints finished 5-1. Games weren't necessarily played at the team's home stadiums. The NFL was looking for exposure and trying to expand its product. The Saints played the St. Louis Cardinals the following week in Shreveport, La. The next week, New Orleans played host in Baton Rouge, La. against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Saints faced the 49ers in Portland, Oregon next, followed by a matchup with the Dolphins in Charleston, South Carolina.
