Hometown Heroes: LeMahieu Hot, Harris Called Up, Montz Belting Long Ball, Landry Dominates

Former LSU star D.J. Lemahieu had a day to remember for the Colorado Rockies, going 4-for-4 with two RBI as Colorado beat Milwaukee 9-6 on August 13.

Lemahieu went on a five-game hitting streak to raise his average to .303 before falling below .300 with a hitless game on August 14. Still, he is proving that he belongs in the big leagues.

In the same game, former Slidell High and LSU star Will Harris made his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Harris pitched the ninth inning, allowing three runs on two hits, including a home run. It has been a meteoric rise for Harris in 2012. He opened the season at Double-A Tulsa, going 2-1 with a 2.62 ERA in 31 games. At Colorado Springs, he was 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA in 13 games.

On August 11, Shreveport's Vernon Wells came up big for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and three RBI despite a 7-4 loss to Seattle.

At Triple-A, former Jesuit and UNO star Johnny Giavotella continues to prove that he does not belong at that level. If Kansas City does not like him, I am certain others would. "Gio" has another five-game hitting streak (9-for-22/.409) to raise his average to .322 with 10 home runs, 20 doubles, two triples and 71 RBI for Omaha. He is ninth in the Pacific Coast League in hitting, fifth in on-base percentage and ninth in RBI.

Also at Triple-A, former Acadiana star Luke Montz belted his 26th home run for the New Orleans Zephyrs (Miami Marlins). Montz is second in the Pacific Coast League in home runs.

At Double-A, former St. Thomas More and LSU star Mikie Mahtook continues to play well. After starting the year in Single-A, Mahtook moved up to Montgomery (Tampa Bay) and he hit three home runs in five games this past week. Mahtook is batting .288 with eight doubles, four home runs and 16 RBI for the Biscuits.

In Single-A, former Baker and LSU star Leon Landry continues to dominate. Since moving to High-A High Desert (Seattle) of the California League, Landry is at an even more torrid pace than he was at Rancho Cucamonga. Landry has hit in all 12 games (26-for-53/.491) with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs and 16 RBI in just 12 games. This, after batting .328 in 80 games at Rancho Cucamonga.

In Rookie League play, former ULM hurler Wil Browning is going great guns for Bluefield of the Appalachian League. Browning is 0-1 with an 0.93 ERA with three saves in nine appearances. He has 15 strikeouts in just 9 2/3 innings.

Also in the Appalachian League, former McNeese State star Zach Butler is pitching very well for the Princeton Rays (Tampa). Butler is 1-0 with a 2.59 ERA and seven saves. He has 24 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings.

Staying in the Appalachian League, just a few months removed from winning a Louisiana 5A state championship, former Barbe star Gavin Cecchini has an eight-game hitting streak (11-for-30/.367) to raise his average to .264 for Kingsport (New York Mets).

Also in the Appalachian League, former Tulane star Jeremy Schaffer has a six-game hitting streak (8-for-21/.381) for Johnson City (St. Louis) to raise his average to .277 with 17 doubles, nine home runs and 43 RBI.

Our HOMETOWN HEROES include all players from Louisiana who are in the major leagues and all players from the Greater New Orleans area high schools and from LSU, Tulane, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana , Delgado and other Louisiana colleges. Any Louisiana native or player who played high school or college baseball in Louisiana and is playing for New Orleans Zephyrs has been added as well by popular demand.
