Hometown Heroes: Paul Earns Place With First-Place Reds

Xavier Paul has gotten into the swing of things for the surging Cincinnati RedsXavier Paul has gotten into the swing of things for the surging Cincinnati Reds

Xavier Paul has a new lease on his baseball life and he is enjoying it.

The former Slidell and Rummel star is back in the majors with the first place Cincinnati Reds and contributing to their hot streak.

Paul went 3-for-5 in his second start for the Reds in left field as Cincinnati rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 4-2 victory over the Astros in Houston. It was a complete effort for Paul who stole a base and also threw out Marwin Gonzalez at third base in the fourth inning.

Taking a chance paid off for Paul when he asked for his release from the Washington organization after not getting called up from Triple A Syracuse, where he hit .315/.376/.512. After signing with the Reds, Paul went 12-for-25 (.480) for Triple-A Louisville before getting called up by Cincinnati. Playing in Houston, the 27-year-old Paul was in the major league ballpark closest to his hometown of Slidell which allowed family members to attend the game at Minute Maid Park. He gave them many reasons to cheer.

The comeback of former St. Amant and ULM (NLU) ace Ben Sheets continues. After a brilliant first start, Sheets backed it up with a terrific second start. Sheets went six innings, allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts in a 4-0 victory over the Nationals in Washington on July 21. In two starts, Sheets is 2-0 with a perfect ERA. In 12 innings, he has allowed seven hits with 11 strikeouts in his return to the majors for the first time since 2010.

In Triple A, former Jesuit and UNO star Johnny Giavotella had a big homecoming, going 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City Royals) past the New Orleans Zephyrs, 5-4 on Tuesday night at Zephyr Field (see recap and video). Giavotella is hitting .325 with nine home runs, 14 doubles and 50 RBI.

On July 19, former LSU slugger Todd Linden of Fresno (San Francisco Giants) reached a milestone. He hit a solo home run against Las Vegas, his 80th in his Grizzlies career and now holds the franchise's all-time career home run record. Linden is hitting .277 with eight home runs, 19 doubles and 47 RBI.

Meanwhile, a pair of former LSU standouts who become first round picks moved closer to the big league this week.

Jared Mitchell, the Chicago White Sox first round pick (23rd overall) in 2009, has been promoted to the Charlotte Knights from Double-A Birmingham by the White Sox. The 23-year old outfielder was leading the Southern League in triples with 12 at the time of the promotion. For the season, he was hitting .240 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI (tied for fifth most in the Southern League). Mitchell is a Westgate High product who also played wide receiver for LSU's football team.

Another ex-LSU outfielder, Mikie Mahtook, has been moved up to Double-A Montgomery by the Tampa Bay Rays. Mahtook was a teammate of Mitchell's on the 2009 College World Series Champions at LSU along before the Rays drafted him 31st overall in 2011. The St. Thomas More alum was batting .290 with five home runs and 19 stolen bases in 25 attempts before the promotion.

Our HOMETOWN HEROES include all players from Louisiana who are in the major leagues and all players from the Greater New Orleans area high schools and from LSU, Tulane, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Delgado and other Louisiana colleges. Any Louisiana native or player who played high school or college baseball in Louisiana and is playing for New Orleans Zephyrs has been added as well by popular demand.
