METAIRIE -- Acting head coach Joe Vitt's dry, biting wit came through loud and clear after Thursday's sixth Organized Team Activity (OTA) at the New Orleans Saints training facility.
Vitt again reiterated that he felt confident estranged quarterback Drew Brees and team officials would eventually get on the same contractual page. When asked the source of his confidence, Vitt replied:
"What else is he going to do? He can't sing or dance!''
Now before anyone accuses Vitt of being flip or callous, it's simply his way of stating the obvious to the same old question for the one millionth time. He means no ill will to Brees in his efforts to strike a long-term, megabuck deal.
But Brees is a football player and where else is he going to make at least $16 million?
"I had a great conversation with Drew the other day,'' Vitt said. "We were talking about training camp. I had some questions and I knew he wanted to do some certain things in training camp.
"So, no, I feel confident that he's going to be here. He'll be here. I don't think anybody felt this was going to be easy. We talked about the lockout last year ... everybody knew it was going to go up to the 23rd hour and the thing was going to get settled.
"There are a lot of revolving pieces here that (Saints GM) Mickey (Loomis) has to fit in with the cap and getting people signed,'' Vitt continued, "and it's all got to fit in the future. This is going to get done. It's going to get done when Drew and Mickey know what's best for our football team and we can move forward.''
