Jesuit dropped their first matchup of the season in a extra-inning heart breaker to ace pitcher Mitch Sewald and Rummel. The Blue Jays went double-or-nothing to exact revenge. And then some.
Matthieu Robert doubled with two outs in the bottom of the 18th inning before Spencer Miller walk-off single scored courtesy runner Michael Cusimano to give Jesuit a 2-1 victory Friday night at John Ryan Stadium.
Neither team had scored since the bottom of the fourth before the game-winning hit. Rummel (19-9) was held scoreless for the final 15 innings of the contest.
The victory for Jesuit (21-5) avenged a 1-0 loss in nine-innings at Kirsch-Rooney earlier in the District 9-5A campaign.
The classic battle of ace starters did not disappoint. Rummel ace and LSU signee Mitch Sewald pitched 10 strong innings allowing just one unearned run.
The defending Class 5A champions enjoyed a massive performance by top starter Emerson Gibbs. The senior Tulane signee pitched 15 innings allowing just one run while striking out 12 and walking just one batter. Andrew Mitchell (1-1) earned the win with three shutout innings in relief of Gibbs.
Andrew Papadopoulos (3-3) was the hard-luck loser for Rummel in relief despite 7.2 innings of brilliant work after replacing Sewald.
Rummel's Ridge Goodwin tripled with two out in the top of the third off Gibbs before Scott Hale singled to drive him home with the game's first run. Jesuit then tied it when Robert hit a sacrifice fly off Sewald to score Armand Daigle who reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fourth before stealing both second and third base.
The Blue Jays are alone at the top of 9-5A with a 6-1 record while the Raiders fall to 4-3 in league play.
Jesuit heads across the Lake to face St. Paul's on Saturday. After losing two extra inning games in as many days, Rummel must trek to LaPlace to battle St. Charles Catholic Saturday.
This classic game will be replayed on WHNO-TV Channel 20 in New Orleans on Monday night at 8 p.m.
