Local American Legion games slated from Friday, June 4:

Teurlings Catholic-Lafayette and Vandebilt Catholic-Houma claimed three of the top four honors on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A All-State teams for baseball and softball.

The Catholic League as we know it may have to take a two-year hiatus beginning the fall of 2011.

Pitching was the order of the day in American Legion play Wednesday. All games were played except for the GNO Vending/Otto Candies game scheduled in Hahnville; that game will now be played Saturday morning at 10:00 AM at Hahnville before the regularly scheduled doubleheader.

Ryan Leonards, of baseball champion Notre Dame, and Jacee Blades, of softball runner-up Parkview Baptist, headline the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State teams.

Justin Sinabaldi led Rummel-based Deanie’s Seafood to a 7-3 victory over Ben Franklin-based Lil Dizzy’s in a battle of the restaurants at Kirsch Rooney.

It had been in the works for weeks and the deal is close to being final. Former Archbishop Rummel baseball coach David Baudry has agreed to terms to serve as an assistant baseball and football coach as well as a teacher at Hahnville High School.

Brian Tallet

Former LSU pitcher Brian Tallet returned to the Toronto Blue Jays from forearm soreness which had sidelined him since April 18 and pitched extremely well Tuesday night against Tampa Bay.

Matt Fury heard an unfamiliar greeting from the Alex Box Stadium public address announcer as he walked to the batter’s box during one of the LSU Purple-Gold World Series intrasquad games.

Pitchers Christina Hamilton of Rosepine, and Bryan Picou, of Northlake Christian, headline the Class 2A All-State baseball and softball teams selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Paul Bertuccini
The reactions of the LSU baseball players and coaches in the Champion’s Club of Alex Box Stadium were awfully subdued when it was revealed the Tigers would travel to Los Angeles for the regionals.

That’s because LSU coach Paul Mainieri heard wind of the news prior to the official announcement and talked to his players before the gathering the Champion’s Club.

The 2010 American Legion season got off to a great start this past weekend.
