Many Louisiana high school football fans felt that the 2009 Class 4A race was one of the toughest in recent memory. Even down the stretch, there was no clear cut favorite to win the title.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, the Rebels of West Monroe came within a whisker of claiming the first state football championship concluded after midnight.

Fives were wild on that long, last day of high school football competition.

The West Monroe Rebels (15-0) of Don Shows won the 5A state championship last Saturday with a 30-0 win over Archbishop Rummel and moved up to #3 in the USA Today Super 25 poll.

When it comes to state championships in Louisiana football prep football history, the dynasty programs include John Curtis (23), Haynesville (15), Evangel (12), Tallulah (9), Istrouma (9), Neville (8), West Monroe (7), Byrd (7) Kentwood (7), Jesuit (7), Lutcher (6), Ruston (6) and Hahnville (6). Several programs have won four state titles. Of course, most have not won any. It is a very difficult task to accomplish.

On Saturday afternoon, there will be a lot of common ground between the 4A state championships in 1-seed, Franklinton (14-0) and 2-seed, Neville (12-1).

As always, there is a great mix of teams lined up for the 29th annual State Farm Superdome Football Classic this Friday night and Saturday in the Louisiana Superdome.

We have now come to the end of the road in prep football and will be in the Superdome when they crown all five state champions for 2009. It's time to unveil the teams that I predict will take home the hardware this weekend.

Archbishop Rummel has cracked the Rivals 100 poll and debuts at #77. Jay Roth’s Raiders defeated Westgate last Friday night in the class 5A semi-finals and will take on the West Monroe Rebels for the 5A state championship Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Superdome.
