Mark Hamilton

For the second time this season, the Tulane baseball team has seen a former pupil rise to the Major League ranks as former All-American first baseman Mark Hamilton was called up by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Minor league seasons officially came to an end this past week other than Arizona Fall League play this summer.

Rain doesn't necessarily stop football games from taking place as scheduled. However, flooded fields do.

Former LSU star Brad Hawpe cleared waivers and is free to sign with any major league team. The 31-year old Hawpe was released by the Colorado Rockies last Wednesday. In 88 games, Hawpe was hitting .255 with 7 home runs and 37 RBI for the Rockies this season.  Hawpe can still hit. Look for a contender to sign him.

After a good first start in Chicago, Thomas Diamond struggled in his next two starts for the Cubs. Overall, he has yielded 12 earned runs in 13 innings pitched. As a result, Chicago manager Lou Piniella has removed Diamond from the starting rotation, moving him to the bullpen.

It is a steep leap from Triple A to major league baseball. Thomas Diamond is in the midst of discovering this fact.

It wasn't easy. Thomas Diamond had to extend himself to a season-high 122 pitches, including 77 strikes in his major league debut over six innings but in the end, he did a solid job for the Chicago Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. His hard work wasn't enough to avoid a loss.

Former Northshore High School star Logan Morrison of the Zephyrs was called up by the Marlins prior to last night's game in San Francisco to replace former Zephyr Chris Coghlan, who is out indefinitely with a torn meniscus in his left knee which may require surgery.

The outstanding season for former LSU star Brian Wilson continues. The National League All-Star is now tied for the major league lead with 26 saves in 28 chances.

The high school football season is just 51 days away and Louisiana's favorite Friday night pastime will be here before you know it.  The Mole will get things rolling, as the dog days of summer are upon us, and begin previewing the upcoming 2010 season beginning with Class 1A.
