LOCAL FOES BATTLE IN NATIONAL TOURNEY:
The New Orleans Spice advanced in the winner's bracket of the Dizzy Dean World Series on Sunday with a hard fought, 4-2, win over JPRD East.
A solid starting pitching performance by Justin Sinibaldi of Archbishop Rummel along with a fine relief effort from Michael Mentzer of Parkview Baptist were key to the Spice victory.
Offensively, Jonathan Coco had a bases clearing, two RBI double in the third inning to give the Spice a 3-0 edge over the Bulldogs. The Spice would then add another in the top of the sixth inning as Justin Sinibaldi doubled and Alex Tucker of Catholic-BR singled him home.
"We had to really fight in order to get this win. We knew it would not be easy against JPRD East and starter Evan Chacon" said Spice head coach Danny Riehm. "Our young men played very hard and had great desire today. We were able to get the three spot in the third to give us some breathing room and Sinibaldi was great on the mound. We now look forward to the next game because in tournament play, the next game is the biggest game."
The win puts the Spice in the "Driver's Seat" winner's bracket game on Monday at 1:30 pm against Mississippi at Snowden Grove Park. The winner of this game will have a spot in the championship round.
