Monday Prep Soccer Recap: Lafayette ends St. Paul's season

Lafayette High, a power on the state level for years, showed Monday that they are still a real threat in Division One. The Lions traveled to Covington and shocked third-seeded St. Paul’s 1-0 to advance to the state semifinals.

Dillon Gallet scored near the nine-minute mark for Lafayette and the Lions made the lead stand with an air-tight defensive effort to post an impressive victory.
Lafayette will play the winner of second-seeded Captain Shreve vs. 10th-seeded Catholic (Baton Rouge) in the semifinals. Captain Shreve and Catholic play Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Lafayette last won a state championship in 2004.
Also on Mardi Gras afternoon, top-seeded Jesuit plays host to eighth-seeded Fontainebleau at 3 p.m. at Pan American Stadium while fifth-seeded Brother Martin travels to face fourth-seeded Dutchtown at Burbank Field at 3:30 p.m.
In girls quarterfinal action, sixth-seeded Mount Carmel upset third-seeded Mandeville 2-1 while 12th-seeded and defending state champion St. Scholastica, the 12th-seed, surprised fourth-seeded Dominican 1-0 in overtime. Top-seeded Fontainebleau downed ninth-seeded West Monroe 2-0.
In Division Two, second-seeded Vandebilt Catholic advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over seventh-seeded Loyola Prep.
In Division Three, top-seeded Sacred Heart rolled over eighth-seeded University Lab 8-0 to move into the semifinals. Fifth-seeded Ben Franklin saw its season end with a 2-0 loss to #13 Ouachita Christian. 10th-seeded Newman’s season ended with a tough 2-1 loss to second-seeded Episcopal of Baton Rouge.
