Two-sport star Sam Tillery is perhaps the best athlete at McGehee High School, one of the top female athletes in the Greater New Orleans area. A standout in volleyball, Tillery is awfully good in basketball as well. More evidence of this was on display Monday night in Metairie.

Tillery scored seven first quarter points to help McGehee overcome a deficit, taking a lead it would not relinquish as McGehee downed Haynes 39-33 in the District 9-2A opener for both teams at Haynes.
Tillery finished with 16 points to lead all scorers. Erefaka Derefaka scored the first five points as Haynes (11-11) took an early lead. However, Derefaka was held scoreless til 7:38 remaining in the fourth period and finished with 11 points.
The Yellowjackets were held to four points in the second, six in the third and trailed 33-20 entering the fourth quarter.
With the win, the Hawks improved to 5-9 overall and evened its 9-2A record at 1-1 while Haynes fell to 0-1 in league play.
