Sam Houston pitcher Baylee Corbello did not let a move up to Class 5A keep her from winning another championship. Barbe shortstop Gavin Cecchini finally won a championship of his own in his last attempt.

For leading their schools to title seasons, the pair have been named the Outstanding Players for the Class 5A softball and baseball teams.

Corbello, a junior, has led Sam Houston to state championship games in each of her three seasons in the circle. The Broncos won the Class 4A championship in 2011 and won the 5A championship this year. Corbello led the team with a 28-6 record, and won extra-inning games in the semifinal and championship game at the state tournament in Sulphur. Corbello had a 0.86 ERA abd hit .496 with 39 RBI.

Cecchini hit .413 with seven home runs, 32 RBI and 31 stolen bases to lead Barbe to its first state championship since 2008. His dad, Glenn Cecchini, is Coach of the Year, after leading the Bucs to a 33-6 record and its sixth state championship.

Billy Stears of Baton Rouge’s St. Joseph’s Academy is softball Coach of the Year. Stears has led the Redstickers to consecutive appearances in the state softball tournament. This year St. Joseph’s went 26-6 and lost to Sam Houston in the semfinals.

Joining Corbello on the softball team are pitchers Caroline Sagrera (26-6) of St. Joseph’s, Hannah Haydel (31-3) of state runner-up Hahnville and Sara Corbello (31-4) of Barbe. The catcher is Katie Browne (.534) of Zachary.

Infielders are first baseman Whitney Troxclair (.440) of St. Amant, second baseman Courtney Dutreix (.430) of Hahnville, shortstop Summer Melancon (.444) of Hahnville and third baseman Lauren Lambert (.441) of West Monroe.

In the outfield are East Ascension’s Bailey Landry (.489), Sam Houston’s Brooke Rozas (.398) and Denham Springs’ Natalie Landry (.415).

Live Oak’s Brooke Gonzales (17-6), Barbe’s Taylor Goree (.543), St. Amant’s Kasey Nielson (23-2), St. Joseph’s Morgan Miller (.406) and Haughton’s Shyanne McDowell (.400) are the utility players.

Joining Cecchini on the baseball team are Barbe teammates Bryce Kingsley (10-1) and infielder Kennon Fontenot (.413).

Other pitchers are Jesuit’s Emerson Gibbs (10-1), Rummel’s Mitchell Sewald (5-1) and Dutchtown’s Jacob Waguespack (8-2). Rounding out the infield are Hahnville’s Cody Farrell (.429) and Brother Martin’s Gregory Deichmann (.411). Acadiana’s Stryker Trahan (.384) is the catcher.

In the outfield are Captain Shreve’s Peyton Attaway (.447), Grace King’s Trent Giambrone (.565) and Byrd’s Richard Carthon (.420).

The utility players are Terrebonne’s Justin Williams (.519), Dutchtown’s Troy Lewis (.373), Zachary’s Jameson Fisher (.554), Denham Springs’ Kyle Cedotal (10-3) and Sam Houston’s Kameron Esthay (8-0).
