BUCS EDGE TROJANS IN BACK-AND-FORTH AFFAIR:
Two Baton Rouge schools separated by a mere two miles went to battle in District 6-4A at Buccaneer Stadium on Thursday night.
The Broadmoor Battlin' Buccaneers edged the Tara Trojans, 22-16. Devontae Thomas ran in the winning score from three yards out for Bucs and converted the two point conversion after just a 13-yard drive set up by a David Siggers fumble recovery.
The win was huge for Broadmoor (4-3, 2-2), hoping for a playoff berth just two season removed from a 0-10 campaign.
"When you go 0-10 every win is big," according to long time head coach Rusty Price. "Both sides deserved to win."
A small roster and injuries have made the challenge greater for Broadmoor. "We got guys out there playing both ways."
Tara took a 16-14 lead with 3:26 to play in the third quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass from John Washington to Darrel Bowie.
Broadmoor quarterback Josh Rogers rushed for 74 yards on 14 carries and added 47 yards passing on four completions in nine attempts.
"They are the heart beat of the team," said Price of Rogers and Thomas.
Tara (2-5 0-3) was forced to throw more than usual, passing 28 times after losing star running back Tyrick Nelson to injury in the first half
"(Nelson) is such a huge part of our offense andwe were running a guy who didn't really know the plays," said Tara head coach Ron Lejeune.
Broadmoor scored first on a drive that was extended by a 24-yard run on a fake punt by Rogers, who finished off the drive with a 20-yard pass to senior halfback ReginaldWilliams. David Collins caught the two-point conversion giving the Bucs an 8-0 lead in thefirst stanza.
The Trojans netted their first points on a safety in the second quarter on a fumble and tackle in the endzone by Windell Robinson. Tara later drove 35 yards after the Bucs' second fake punt attempt was stuffed. A three yard keeper from Washington gave the Trojans a 9-8 advantage with 5:54 to play in the first half.
Broadmoor took a halftime lead with just 40 seconds to play before the break. Rogers connected with Williams for the second time on the night from 4 yards out to cap a 10-play, 74-yard drive. The Bucs led 14-9 at intermission.
Broadmoor travels to Lafayette next Friday while Tara will host winless Istrouma, also next Friday.
