JAYS WIN IN HEART-STOPPER
It took a while to decide. With the hearts of fans coming close to stopping, the top-seed in Division I advanced in stoppage time.
As stoppage time was nearing an end, Jesuit got the game winner on a goal by Kyle Wilson off of an assist by Sebastian Pereira-Pinzon to avert overtime and provide Jesuit with a 3-2 victory over fourth-seed St. Thomas More to advance to the Division I final.
It was a back-and-forth affair in which there appeared to be an inordinate amount of stoppage time with few stoppages occurring during regulation.
St. Thomas More struck first, scoring in the tenth minute on a goal by Alex Stringer to take a 1-0 lead which carried into halftime. Jesuit scored a first half goal but is was waved off for offside.
Jesuit came our roaring in the second half.
The Blue Jays got the equalizer on a header by Phil Hicks off of a free kick by Evan Kramer early in the second half.
Jesuit took the lead as Charles Mansour scored off of a throw in to make it 2-1 before the Cougars tied it as Stringer scored off of a corner kick to make it 2-2 in stoppage time, setting the stage for Wilson's heroics.
Jesuit improved to 26-1-4 on the season with the win while St. Thomas More ended its season 24-3-1.
The Blue Jays move into the Division I state title match against second-seeded St. Paul's next Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium in a rematch of last year's championship match, won by St. Paul's 2-1.
The Division II match between top-seeded Country Day and fifth-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas in Hammond was postponed due to wet grounds. The match is now set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hunter Stadium on the campus of St. Paul's in Covington.
In addition, the other Division II semifinal pitting fourth-seed Alexandria at top-seeded St. Louis Catholic was postponed as well and will now be played Monday at 4 p.m. at McNeese State.
