Here are the final 2009 regular season high school statistical leaders compiled by Ron Brocato for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association with contributions from newspapers from across the state:



As the only Catholic high school in New Orleans, Jesuit had just one opponent of its size to beat to claim the prep football championship of New Orleans – its public school counterpart, Warren Easton during the first three decades of the 20th Century.



Several members of the Louisiana Sportswriters Association put their historical knowledge together to assemble a long list of what they feel are the most significant events that have occurred in this state’s sporting world.

If it’s what’s up front that really counts, then the interior linemen who protected their quarterbacks and cleared the way for their ball carriers to “run to glory” are the players responsible for their success. And New Orleans has had more than its share of greats.

Today more than ever, a football team’s defensive secondary is a critical element to success stopping the opponent. With the advent of the West Coast offense, football is no longer a game in which the run sets up the pass.

Part of St. Augustine’s 2010 football team won a championship game at the Cotton Bowl a few weeks ago.


The Catholic League as we know it may have to take a two-year hiatus beginning the fall of 2011.


And the winners are…

Track and field is the highlight sport of this weekend’s Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championship events.


When the Louisiana High School Athletic Association announces the 32-team field for the 2010 baseball playoffs on Saturday, look for 10 teams from the New Orleans area to be in that number, including four of the five members of District 10-5A (the Catholic League).
