JUNE OPENS WITH PLENTY OF ACTION:
Brooks Vial of Hahnville-based Otto Candies threw a no-hitter against Holy Cross-based Ponstein's in Friday night's nightcap at Kirsch Rooney.
The game was not looking too good for Vial and Otto Candies early on as Ponstein's took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first without a hit. A leadoff walk, two errors, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out yielded the opening runs.
Jonathan Billings of Ponstein's allowed only two hits through the first four innings and was sailing along until the top of the fifth. Billings lost his command and walked the first three batters. Zack Cunningham relieved him and quickly hit the first batter he faced with his first pitch driving in a run. A fielder's choice retired one runner at the plate but Tyler Lamers hit a single to left driving home two. Cunningham struck out the next batter but walked the following three hitters to drive home two more. Ponstein's then went to the pen again for Josh Martino who retired the side.
Vial was in complete control until two out in the seventh. He retired the first two batters and then walked the next three to load the bases but struck out the last man he faced to complete the no hitter.
In the opener of the night, Chalmette-based Gulf Coast Bank's Sean Esponge threw 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before pinch hitter Aspen Rodriguez singled over the outstretched glove of the second baseman. Esponge was then relieved by Devin Baldridge, who was able to complete the game.
Offensively, Gulf Coast Bank was led by Brett Barrileaux (2 for 2, 3 RBI) with an inside-the-park home run, Jourdan Maiaro ( 2 for 3, 2 RBI and a triple), and Cameron Sims (a single and double in three plate appearances).
In other action around the area, Peake BMW (Brother Martin) defeated Culicchia Neurological (John Ehret) 14-1, and Townsend Homes (St. Charles Catholic) topped Refuel (Archbishop Shaw) 11–4.
