American Legion: Peake Wins Squeaker; Deanie's-Ponstein's Ends In Tie
Posted by: Sidney Parfait in Prep Sports on Jun 16, 2012
TWO VERY DIFFERENT FRIDAY ENCOUNTERS:
Peake BMW and Otto Candies battled it out Friday evening at Kirsch Rooney with Peake BMW (Brother Martin-based) eking out a 1–0 victory.
Otto Candies' Brooks Vial allowed only six hits and one walk over six innings, Peake's Cory Gaconi was a little better allowing only three hits and two walks over seven innings.
Peake BMW scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Peyton Senner led off with a sharp single, moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Jarrett Gongora and scored as Owen Magee doubled with two outs. '
Otto Candies had their biggest threat in the seventh as Tyler Lamers hit a two out single and Easton Melancon followed with a single to put runners at first and second. But Gaconi got pinch hitter Todd Porche to fly out to right to end the game. Peake BMW moves to 9–3 while Otto Candies falls to 9 – 6.
The nightcap at Kirsch Rooney was just the opposite type of game.
Holy Cross-based Ponstein's and Rummel-based Deanie's Seafood battled to a 6–6 tie over seven innings.
Ponstein's jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the bottom of the first after they strung together three hits and two walks after the first two batters were retired easily.
Deanie's scored one in the top of the third, Connor McWilliams worked Ponstein's pitcher Jordan Fontenelle for walk. Spencer Veit followed with a sharp double down the left field line to score McWilliams.
In the bottom of the fourth, it appeared that Ponstein's put the game away. Blake Toscano led off with a walk and moved to second as Christian Volion was safe on an error. Sammy Capielano singled to load the bases. Brandon Herrara singled to drive home one run. Lance Licciardi walked to drive in the second run, Jonathan Billings greeted relief pitcher Scott Wetzel with an RBI single, and the final run scored on a sacrifice fly to right making it a 6–1 score.
Fontenelle allowed only two hits but walked four and was relieved by Zack Cunningham in the top of the fifth. Roper led off the inning with a double, advanced to third as McWilliams grounded out and scored as Veit got his second RBI with a ground out.
In the top of the sixth, Deanie's loaded the bases as Frank Caracci walked for the third time, Colin Leroux singled and Roper beat out a bunt to third base. With one out Veit singled off the pitcher's leg getting his third RBI of the evening. Ross Budenski singled to right driving in a run and Roper scored as the right fielder made an errant throw. The score was now 6–5.
Wetzel was brilliant for Deanie's over the last three innings holding Ponstein's scoreless.
In the top of the seventh, Deanie's got the first two batters on with a hit batsman and a walk. After a strike out and a fielder's choice it looked like Ponstein's was going to survive but McWillaims walked to load the bases and Spencer Veit stepped up again. Veit singled to right driving in the tying run but Roper was gunned down at the plate leaving the game, 6-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Capielano singled and Licciardi reached on a two out error but Wetzel got the final out on a fly out to end the game in a tie because of the time limit.
At John Ehret field, Retif Oil scored a 3–1 victory over Culicchia Neurological as Luke Voiron homered for the Oilers.
