American Legion: Gibbs, Ebersole Strong On Mound To Fuel Playoff Wins

Posted by: Sidney Parfait in Prep Sports

SEVERAL TEAMS CLINCH REGIONAL BERTHS:

Emerson Gibbs went the distance on Saturday night leading Retif Oil to the winners' bracket game in the City Series. The 5-2 Retif win over Ponstein's also earned the Oilers a spot in the South East Regional Playoffs next weekend.

Gibbs scattered four hits and walked two over nine innings. He had a rocky start when he surrendered a run in the first inning without allowing a hit. Gibbs hit leadoff batter Ryan Taylor with a pitch and then walked Connor Caminita, Sammy Capielano laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Lance Licciardi hit a sacrifice fly to right field driving Taylor home.

The lead did not last long though as Retif leadoff batter Mitch Alexander singled to center to open the bottom of the first and moved to third on a double by Brady Williamson. Alexander scored on a Tony Fortier-Bensen ground out. Williamson scored on a double by Matt Robert making the score 2–1 after one inning.

Gibbs and Ponstein's starter Andrew Scherer settled down and battled the remainder of the game.

Retif scored a single run in the fifth. Matt Braud led off with a double, Scherer hit Armand Daigle with a pitch and walked Alexander on four pitches. The bases were loaded with no outs, but Scherer coaxed a ground ball to Blake Toscano at short to trigger a double play with Braud scoring on the play. Scherer struck out the next batter to end the inning with only a 3-1 deficit.

Ponstein's narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the eighth when Toscano reached on a 3 base error to right and he scored as Taylor reached on another miscue by the Retif infield. Taylor was caught stealing and Gibbs got the next two batters to go into the bottom of the eighth with a 3-2 lead.

Retif answered again in the eighth with Alexander leading off with a bunt single, advancing to second on a Williamson single and to third as Fortier-Bensen drew a base on balls.

Alexander was forced at the plate and Scherer got the next batter on an infield pop up but Jonathan Lee singled to score two runs, making the score 5-2.

Christian Clayton relieved Scherer and struck out the only batter he faced to retire the side.

Ponstein's got a two out single by Jonathan Billings in the ninth but Gibbs got his third strike out of the game to end it.

Retif will play the winner of the Ponstein's/Peake BMW game tomorrow evening with the championship at hand.

Ponstein's must face Peake BMW at 4:00 PM tomorrow and the winner will have to turn around and play Retif to stay alive.

In the first game of the doubleheader Peake BMW eliminated Roubion Elevation and Shoring with a resounding 16-0 win at Kirsch Rooney on Saturday afternoon.

Jonathan Ebersole pitched seven innings allowing only four hits and a pair of walks in earning the victory.

Peake BMW scored in every inning except the second in the victory.

Leading the way for the Peake bats were Owen Magee with a 3 for 4 performance including a double, Greg Deichmann 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, and Cody Ducote 2 for 4 with an RBI. Peake was aided in the victory by five Roubion errors.

For the other first district regional spot, Peake BMW faces Ponstein at 7:30 on Sunday night. The winner will face Retif Oil in the championship round Monday at 4 p.m.

In 2nd District West action Saturday, Valero St. Charles shutout Townsend Homes 10-0 and will face Otto Candies at Hahnville on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Both teams have qualified for the South East Regionals but are playing for the district championship.

In 2nd District East play at Kirsch Rooney, Deanie's Seafood used a ninth inning rally and a two out double by Devin Morrill to edge Culicchia Neurological and eliminate them from action.

Deanie's will now face Gulf Coast Bank and Trust at Kirsch Rooney on Sunday morning at 10:00 AM for a spot in the South East Regionals and the right to face Refuel at Archbishop Shaw on Monday evening with the District Championship on the line.

Gulf Coast Bank or Deanie's will have to defeat Refuel twice to claim the championship.
